TODD WILSON, CEO
The long-tenured Vice President and former Chief Financial Officer of NASCAR, Wilson is the Chief Executive Officer of Golf Channel Academy. Wilson’s love for golf and his understanding of how to build business networks that bring together various interests into a cohesive league – such as NASCAR’s network of speedway owners – is what gave him the idea for Golf Channel Academy. GCA is founded on the same “brand-within-a-brand” concept, with participating coaches and academies being operated and marketed under the Golf Channel Academy brand while also maintaining their own individuality.
While NASCAR’s CFO, Todd negotiated some of the largest media contracts in the history of sports. NASCAR fans are the most brand-loyal in all of sports and as a result, more Fortune 500 companies participate in NASCAR than any other sport. Todd remains involved with the “France Family Office.” The France Family founded and continues to control NASCAR and International Speedway Corporation (ISCA). He is also a founding Board Member and continues to serve on the Board as Treasurer of the NASCAR Foundation.
Prior to joining NASCAR in 1999, Todd was a Tax Partner with Arthur Andersen in Orlando, Fla., where he ran the Tax Division. During a 14-year career in public accounting, he gained experience in a variety of industries. Two of those years were spent in Washington, D.C., where he tracked legislation, worked in a number of technical areas, and consulted on tax matters that were brought to him by clients throughout the world.
Todd earned Bachelor and Master Degrees, with an emphasis in taxation, from the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he graduated with honors in 1984. He is a certified public accountant in Florida and a member of the Florida and American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants.
When Todd is not handling his many duties for Golf Channel Academy, he spends time playing golf and working on his game. Todd is a member of Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., and a member of Pablo Creek Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla., where he resides.
SCOTT NOVELL, PRESIDENT
The Golf Channel Academy concept stems from a collaborative idea between CEO Todd Wilson and Novell, GCA’s President. An established attorney who has held several executive positions, including Chief Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, Novell is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Nexus Group, Inc., an Orlando-based boutique mergers and acquisitions firm representing small businesses throughout the country in buy/sell and financing transactions.
From 1997-2003, Novell held several executive positions including Chief Legal Officer and Executive Vice President with a publicly held healthcare services company. He also was in charge of the company’s acquisition department that resulted in approximately 200 company acquisitions over a period of four years. In 2000, he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer and led operations of more than 550 locations and 5,500 employees across 44 states. During his tenure, annual operating income increased from $110 to $165 million.
Scott earned two degrees from the University of Central Florida. His undergraduate was in accounting where he graduated in the top 1 percent of his class (1983). He also earned a Masters of Science in Accounting degree while working at Ernst & Young (1986). Scott then completed his law degree at the University of Florida Law School in 1992, graduating in the top 8 percent of his class. After finishing law school, he was accepted at the highest ranked Masters of Law in Taxation program in the country at New York University. He passed both the CPA and Bar Exam on the first sittings. Scott practiced law and was promoted to partner at the Orlando-based firm of Gray Robinson.
Novell has a passion for sports and has played many, including football, where he was a starting linebacker for the Canton Bulldogs of the Minor Professional Football League. He is an avid barefoot water skier and has also boxed (Golden Gloves heavyweight division) and raced motorcycles. However, his biggest athletic challenge began in 2013 when he decided to learn golf as an experiment to see if an “old dog” can learn one more trick. He should have no trouble finding good instruction.
